“No one understands Paris or the heritage of the Crillon better than Mr Lagerfeld,” said Radha Arora, President of Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, the Crillon’s parent company. As part of the hotel’s recent extensive refurbishment program, the creative director of Chanel designed two signature suites, Les Grands Appartements, and forgoing her family’s pied-a-terre for the first time in 25 years, it was here that Carmen chose to spend New Year’s Eve.
Located at the foot of the Champs-Élysées, the landmark hotel boasts an enviable position, and the fourth-floor Grand Appartements offer breathtaking views over Paris, including the Eiffel Tower, Grand Palais, Musée d’Orsay and Place de la Concorde. An introvert at heart, Carmen was able to enjoy the city’s spectacular celebrations at a comfortable distance.
Dating back to the 18th century, the Hôtel de Crillion first opened its doors in 1909, and as an authority on antiques from the era, Karl Lagerfeld’s suites are a deft blend of old world glamour and distinctly modern touches.
Featuring bespoke furniture, marble bathrooms and carved wooden walls, a dining room and contemporary dressing rooms, the crystal-chandelier lit suites represent Mr Lagerfeld’s "personal vision of French chic and modernity", but there is also an element of humor - photos of his beloved cat Choupette hang on the walls in one of the suites, and one of the rooms is carpeted in a specially woven design that mimics graphic cat scratches.
Despite being in the 1st arrondissement, the secluded suites offered Carmen the chance to celebrate quietly with those closest to her, and she now counts the Hôtel de Crillion among her preferred places to stay.
